Monkey Dance Your Mystery Hunt puzzle of the day: Dead and Gone I finished up work at 6:50pm tonight and was in the mood to do something interesting, so I pulled up todays IAP calendar and realized that in 10 minutes, a director would be screening a really interesting documentary over in Building 32 (aka the Stata Center) and taking questions, so I ran on over. The film, Monkey Dance, is a documentary about the lives of three Cambodian-American teenagers in Lowell, Massachusetts (about 30 miles north of Boston, its home to the third largest Cambodian community in the world behind Phnom Penh and Long Beach, CA). In subject matter, it was a little like the PBS series from a few years back, American High (filmed at Highland Park High School in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago), but it was a lot more interesting (at least to me). In the film, all three teens were from low income families. Each had dealt with significant challenges siblings in gangs, a sister convicted of murder, a father getting cancer. Each had their own conflict between their parents Cambodian world and their very American world. Their parents speak Khmer while they speak American teen slang and in the case of one character, with a heavy Boston accent (think Matt Ben in Good Will Hunting yknow, pahk the cah in the yahd, etc.). The title of the film, Monkey Dance, refers to a classical Cambodian dance starring Hanuman the Monkey God. The characters are united in their love for dance, both classical dance through Lowells Angkor Dance Troupe as well as American hip hop dance. Anyway, onto the show The posters around campus advertising the screening The director, Julie Mallozzi no relation to the Car Talk guys, Tom Ray Magliozzi, both MIT alums speaking about her film. The standing room only crowd was quite appreciative. Overall, a pretty cool experience, though not as cool as when Mira Nair came to speak last year and kind of offered my friend a role in her next film, which is an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiris The Namesake with the lead role of Gogol being played by Kal Penn?? Sadly, I missed the screenings and director talks at Septembers Silkscreens Asian American Independent Film Festival at MIT, since I was on the West Coast at the time. For those of you with an Asian Students Club or a Film Society on your activity list, you may want to seriously consider asking Julie Mallozzi to do a screening of her film at your school. Its a great film for discussion, from both a cultural/sociological perspective and from a movie enthusiast perspective. Her contact information is here. We can predict the message the artist intended to communicate by making use of the sense of sight. From our sense of sight, we see the image of a black mouse that has been sprayed on the wall. Above the image are the words, BECAUSE IM WORTHLESS sprayed in red and in capital letters. The mouse is holding a red painting brush and a white tin of paint. The mouse has worn a forlorn look giving us the impression that he is perturbed because of something (NguyenPatrick 2010, 80-100). The sad and worried look is evident from the expression on the mouses face. The black color of the mouse gives us a clue of the race of the artist to be black. There are various species of mice such as the white mice and the albino mice, but he decided to use a black mouse. The artist has chosen the red color, an emotionally intense color to spray the words above the image. The red color is a demonstration of the anger and rage that he feels as he sprayed the image above. Moving away from the graffiti, our sense of sight also gives us insight into the nature of the environment that the graffiti is set. The dull dilapidated brick walls give us a clue about the economic situation of the neighborhood the building is located. The cracks on the walls also give us the idea that this is an area that has been neglected.The various details of the graffiti image above and the surrounding environment complement each other perfectly to give meaning to it.The words painted above the graffiti enable us to understand the emotions as well as the thoughts of the artist who painted the ima ge. Most blacks in the U.S.A live in ghettos because of economic hardships. In the ghettos, most are out of work and do not attend school. With few skills and contempt for low-wage jobs, they subsist through the underground economy of illicit trading and crime. As a consequence, they are the subject of police brutality (PinnarWilliam 2001, 50-70).The law enforcement officers discriminate upon black youths, and they are sometimes illegally detained and tortured leading to their deaths. Such youths feel unwanted and unrecognized and sometimes resort to revenge against the law enforcement officers. This has resulted to shootings of police officers such as those experienced in Louisiana and Detroit. The youths in such settings frequently make use of graffiti to express their anger and frustrations to the society as large.The graffiti has been displayed on a city street because it is here where it will attract the at tention of a majority of people. One of the diseases more prevalent in my family is Diabetes Mellitus type II. It has been the cause of death of one of my paternal great grandmothers, and now it is starting to develop in my maternal grandmother as prediabetes. Therefore, it is very important for me to identify the characteristics of this disease, its prevalence, its risk factors and prevention, and its treatments. According to the American Diabetes Association, type 2 diabetes, or non-insulin dependent diabetes, is defined as a chronic condition in which the body does not use insulin properly, this is known as insulin resistance. This condition is caused because the pancreas is not able to produce the insulin necessary to normalize blood glucose levels, so these levels†¦show more content†¦These terms stand for increased thirst, hunger, and urination respectively. Hunger may increase because cells do not receive enough energy in form of glucose, which can also cause fatigue. Weight loss is another symptom. As the body cannot metabolize the sugar, the body uses other sources for energy. Blurred vision is another symptom of diabetes. As glucose is too high on blood, fluid may be pulled from the eye lenses affecting the ability to focus. In addition, as diabetes affects the healing and resisting infections’ ability, slow-healing sores or frequent infections have a high incidence in diabetics. Finally, the insulin resistance may produce acanthosis nigricans which is a production of areas of darkened skin. In the long term, more serious conditions may be developed from diabetes. One of these complications is cardiovascular disease. Diabetes increses the risk of heart attack, stroke and hypertension among others. Diabetes may also end in neuropathy, which expresses in tingling, numbness, and even loss of all sense in affected limbs. This also may lead to foot damage, which can end up in amputation of affected areas with gangrene. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and erectil e dysfunction can occur also because of the nerve damage. Nephropathy is another complication. Introduction The origin of human languages can be termed as the surfacing of language among humans (Kenneally 10). This topic has remained highly controversial for a very long time. There is very little empirical evidence that can be used to guide research in this area. The mother tongue hypothesis This hypothesis was put forward in the year 2004 to try and get a solution to the problem of language origin. The theory seems to suggest that the Darwinian principle of â€Å"kin selection- convergence of genetic interests between relatives- may be part of the solution† (Harrub, Thompson and Miller pp. 5). Mother tongue hypothesis was put forward by Tecumseh Fitch who suggests that language initially developed as a form of communication between mothers and their own off springs in what is often described as mother tongue. (Kenneally 56) This extended later to other relatives such as siblings and other close relatives. The theory dwells on the idea that the interests of closely associated speakers and listeners were common. According to Fitch, the shared genetic makeup enabled relatives to build a considerable amount of trust and cooperation for the intrinsically unreliable signals which were later accepted as trustworthy words fit for communication (Lieberman, McCarthy and Strait 1441, pp. 4). The mother tongue hypothesis may offer some explanation as to how human language came about but it does not provide any empirical data to support the thinking. In my view, the theory does not offer any reason as to why language developed only in the human species. All other animals, including apes share genes and live in some form of communities. The theory does not explain why language did not develop in such animals. The theory does not offer any substantive reasons as to why early humans restricted communication to relatives. Reciproc al altruism can be described as the idea that â€Å"if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours† (Kenneally 102, pp. 5). Reciprocal altruism as used in this theory can be depicted as the relationship that is natured between people or individuals who interact constantly. However, language development at community level requires universal reciprocity rather than individual. Ulbaek explains this by pointing out that early human society must have had some form of moral regulation. Again, this hypothesis does not provide any evidence to support the thinking. It does not give a clear picture of what mechanisms were in place to ensure that obligatory reciprocal altruism was enforced at the community level (Harrub, Thompson and Miller, pp. 6). Although proponents have offered some explanations, its not enough validate the theory. Some critics have pointed out that verbal communication doesn’t really work in terms reciprocal altruism. I find this to be true as people do n ot always talk to other people or individuals who are willing to listen to them. It’s common to see people offering information or communicating to any person who is willing to listen without expecting anything in return (Kenneally 125). The gossip and grooming hypothesis This hypothesis is based on the principle that â€Å"if you scratch my back I will scratch yours† and was put forward by Robin Dunbar (Kenneally 45, pp. 6). According to him, gossiping achieves the same objective for a group of humans living together as grooming in other primate species. Dunbar explains that, when human social groups began to swell up and become extremely large, the practice of grooming one’s associates became tiresome and problematic. To counter this challenge, the early humans invented verbal communication as an efficient and cheap form of grooming (Harrub, Thompson and Miller, pp. 8). Thus to impress friends and other acquaintances, one only needed to utter some sounds. This would ensure that a large number of friends are kept happy simultaneously. Vocal grooming then gradually evolved into spoken language (Kenneally 120). In my view, vocal grooming, as Dunbar calls it, could not have been a satisfactory alternative to manual grooming. The theory is however much better than the others as it offers a better explanation of what triggered verbal communication.
